Why replacing plastic starts with the application, not the material
Packaging requirements, not material lists, decide which alternatives actually work.
Most conversations about replacing plastic start with a material: *What about seaweed? Should we try molded fibre?* It feels like the natural place to begin. In practice, it is the wrong one.
## A material is only right for a job
The same material can be a good choice for one pack and a poor choice for another. A molded fibre tray handles a dry snack well. Put a wet, oily ready meal in it and the picture changes. What decides the outcome is not the material's name. It is what the packaging has to do.
Before looking at any material, write down the job:
- **What goes inside?** Dry, wet, oily, acidic, frozen or hot-filled.
- **How long must it last?** A few days, several months, a year on a shelf.
- **How is it filled and sealed?** By hand, on a line, with heat.
- **Where does it travel?** A short local trip or a long export route.
- **What happens at the end?** Industrial composting, home composting, recycling, or none of these.
## Why the order matters
Starting with the application narrows the field quickly. Requirements such as moisture or oxygen barrier, heat resistance and food-contact approval rule most options out before cost or availability even come into it. What is left is a short list worth testing.
Starting with a material does the reverse. You collect samples you hope will fit, discover that one requirement cannot be met, and begin again.
## What we do at MidGreen
We begin with a conversation about the packaging you use today: the product, the format, the volumes and the constraints. Only then do we look at the catalogue and compare the options that genuinely fit, side by side, on properties, cost indicators, documentation and supply.
> A good shortlist is not the longest list of alternatives. It is the few materials that can actually do the job.
If you are weighing up a switch, the most useful thing you can do is describe the application in detail. [Tell us about your packaging](/contact) and we will take it from there.
